The latest commission to appear on the fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square is another rather unusual creation – ‘Gift Horse’, sculpted by German-American artist Hans Haacke.
Unveiled by Mayor Boris on 5 March I think it’s an improvement on the enormous blue cock that previously stood on the fourth plinth, but it’s complex message isn’t presented with much subtlety. Wrapping a live stock ticker from the London Stock Exchange around the horse’s front hooves is a little crude in my opinion. Money! Power! Get it??
If you’re interested in what came before Gift Horse, I covered all of the previous commissions over on my old blog – one or two of which were very subtle indeed! You can find these entries here, here, here and here.
